The problem

Dry skin is becoming an increasingly common problem in society, affecting people of all ages. Depending on the cause and how severe the dryness is, the skin's protective function may be impaired to a greater or lesser extent. When the skin barrier is weakened, sensitivity to external irritants increases, so inflammatory reactions such as eczema, contact allergies or even skin infections occur more often and can have medically significant consequences.

In addition to external (exogenous) factors such as dry heated air, cold wind or improper skin care, internal processes also play an important role – especially age. Over the years, natural biological ageing and environmental exposure make the skin thinner and reduce its moisture and lipid content, so in older people dry skin often becomes a constant problem. Examples include neurodermatitis (atopic dermatitis) and psoriasis. A tendency towards atopy, which is increasingly diagnosed in people of all ages, is particularly significant: today around 15–20% of the population have a genetic predisposition to atopic conditions, which are characterised by increased skin sensitivity, dryness and a tendency towards inflammation.

The solution

To maintain the skin's optimal protective function, it is essential to keep a balance between moisture-binding substances such as glycerin and hyaluronic acid and lipids, which form a protective film and prevent moisture loss. This balance is necessary for the skin to remain supple, smooth and resilient to external influences. If the balance is disturbed – by environmental factors, illness or internal changes in the body – the skin loses its ability to retain moisture and becomes dry, rough and sensitive. Very dry, atopic skin typically shows a marked lack of urea, one of the most important natural moisturising factors, so such skin needs additional, targeted care.
